[ARCHIVED] Carteret County Hires New Assistant County Manager

20250328 Reynal, Matt

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (March 28, 2025) – Carteret County is pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Reynal as the new Assistant County Manager. Reynal, who brings over 10 years of local government leadership experience, officially began his role on March 17, 2025, following a competitive interview process.

Interim County Manager Sharon Griffin offered Reynal the position, citing his proven track record in municipal operations, finance, and strategic planning.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matt to Carteret County,” said Griffin. "His combination of leadership in local government and dedication to public service makes him an ideal fit for our team. His expertise will be invaluable as we continue to serve our residents effectively and efficiently.”

Reynal most recently served as Assistant Director of Recreation and Parks for Henrico County, Virginia, where he oversaw key community programs, facility improvements, and operational budgets. Prior to that, he held dual leadership roles as Deputy Town Manager and Finance Director for the Town of Ashland, Virginia, where he managed multi-million-dollar operating and capital budgets, streamlined operations, and led long-term strategic initiatives. His expertise in municipal finance and organizational efficiency will support Carteret County’s ongoing priorities. This includes the realignment of operations and facilities across the organization to improve service delivery.

A U.S. Army veteran who deployed to Afghanistan and Haiti, Reynal holds a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from George Mason University. Reynal is also a graduate of the University of Virginia’s LEAD program for local government leaders and earned the Marcia Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award in 2021 from the Virginia Local Government Manager Association.

“I’m honored to join Carteret County and work alongside such a dedicated team,” said Reynal. “I look forward to contributing to the county’s success and finding innovative ways to address the needs of our community.”

Carteret County anticipates Reynal’s leadership will bring fresh perspective and enhanced collaboration across the organization.
