[ARCHIVED] Carteret County Aging Services hosts Scam Jam to educate public on fraud

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (April 5, 2024) – Carteret County Aging Services will host a free educational event, “Scam Jam,” on Monday, April 22, to help residents identify and avoid fraud. Scam Jam will be held at the Leon Mann, Jr. Enrichment Center, located at 3820 Galantis Drive in Morehead City, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

This free event is open to the public and geared specifically towards older adults and caregivers for the elderly. Scam Jam will feature a series of presentations designed to empower attendees with knowledge on protecting themselves and their families from various scams. Topics covered will include cybercrime, mail fraud, reverse mortgages, identity theft, Medicare fraud, and investment scams.

Scheduled guest speakers include Karen Hardesty, Carteret County Register of Deeds; Stephanie Bias with the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program; David Beere, a community resource officer with the Town of Emerald Isle Police Department; and Mansell Carloni, an attorney with White & Allen, P.A.

Carteret County Aging Services is also planning a Shred-a-Thon event later this year in June. This event will provide a safe and secure opportunity for older adults and caregivers to dispose of documents containing sensitive information that could be used by scammers.
