CARTERET COUNTY, NC (January 24, 2024) – The Carteret County Department of Social Services (DSS) is offering limited funding to help caregivers of individuals aged 60 and older or those with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia through the Family Caregiver Support Program. This program provides vouchers for reimbursement of respite care services, giving caregivers a much-needed break from their daily responsibilities.
“Caring for a loved one can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding,” said Jessica Adams, Director of Carteret County DSS. “This program offers vital support to caregivers, allowing them to take time for themselves and recharge, ensuring they can continue providing quality care.”
Eligible caregivers can receive vouchers for reimbursement of respite care services, providing them with a break from their caregiving responsibilities. Respite care options include in-home services, adult day care programs, residential placements such as nursing homes or assisted living, and summer camps or after-school programs for older relatives caring for children.
To qualify for the program, caregivers must be at least 18 years old and provide regular care to an individual who meets one of two criteria: either being 60 years of age or older, or having a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Additionally, the care recipient must require assistance with at least two essential daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, or toileting. This ensures the program targets those providing necessary support for individuals with significant needs.
Limited funding is available, with vouchers of $500 per instance or $2,500 per fiscal year awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested caregivers are encouraged to visit https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/aging-and-adult-services/family-caregiver-support-program to learn more about the program or contact DSS at 252-728-3181 to apply as soon as possible.
