[ARCHIVED] Carteret County monitoring potential tropical disturbance

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (July 31, 2024) – Carteret County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the potential development of a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean. While it is too early to determine the system’s potential impact on the area, if any, officials urge residents to be prepared this hurricane season.

“As we approach the peak of hurricane season, it is crucial for our community to be prepared,” said Stephen Rea, Director of Carteret County Emergency Management. “By taking proactive steps to create an emergency kit, develop a communication plan, and secure their home, residents can significantly increase their chances of weathering a storm safely.”

To ensure you and your family are ready for a potential storm, Carteret County Emergency Management recommends the following:

  • Create an Emergency Kit: Ensure you have essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid kits, medications, and personal items like important documents and cash.
  • Develop a Family Communication Plan: Establish a designated meeting place and ensure all family members have up-to-date contact information.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather reports, sign up for emergency alerts, and familiarize yourself with evacuation routes.
  • Protect Your Home: Secure windows, bring in outdoor items, and take steps to protect your home from flooding.
  • Safety During and After the Storm: Stay indoors, avoid floodwaters and downed power lines, and follow official instructions after the storm passes.

For additional information on hurricane preparedness, visit the Carteret County Emergency Management website or contact the office at 252-222-5841.
