[ARCHIVED] Sharon Griffin named as Carteret County’s new in-house legal counsel

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (June 21, 2024) – Carteret County Board of Commissioners unanimously selected Sharon Griffin as the new in-house legal counsel during the Monday, June 17, 2024 board meeting. Griffin will begin her in-house employment with Carteret County government on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Griffin has served in the Interim County Attorney role since March 2024. Griffin’s previous work experience includes being a law partner at Mewborn & DeSelms in Jacksonville, N.C., and previously serving as Onslow County Manager for four years. Griffin also worked as a litigation and local government attorney for Teague Campbell Dennis & Gorham and Scudder Law PLLC, and held leadership roles with national, state and county organizations, serving as senior national program director for the National Association of Counties and executive general counsel for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

"Her extensive legal experience and dedicated service as Interim County Attorney have shown her exceptional abilities and commitment to our community. We look forward to her continued contributions and the positive impact she will have in her new role."

The Carteret County Attorney serves as the chief counsel on all legal matters affecting Carteret County government. The County Attorney provides legal counsel and representation for all County departments and agencies, anticipates legal problems or risks for all matters involving the County and makes recommendations to the County Manager and Board of County Commissioners regarding legal policies, procedures and actions.

Of the appointment, Griffin stated, “I am excited and honored to serve Carteret County and the Board of Commissioners in this important role, and I truly appreciate the confidence the Board and Management have invested in me.”

Griffin earned her Juris Doctorate from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University magna cum laude, earned a Master of Arts in Communication from Radford University, and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from North Carolina State University with honors. She is also a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s program in Municipal & County Administration and the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia. She is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and is a certified North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission Superior Court Mediator.

Griffin, who raised her children in Carteret County – one graduating from East Carteret High School and two from West Carteret High School – also has parents who reside in Carteret County.
