[ARCHIVED] Carteret County recognizes sexual assault awareness month with events and proclamation

SAAM - April

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (March 27, 2024) – The Carteret County Rape Crisis Program is reminding residents that April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). SAAM is dedicated to raising public awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on prevention strategies.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center organizes SAAM annually to promote public understanding and action against sexual assault. In Carteret County, the Board of Commissioners will acknowledge April as SAAM with an official proclamation supporting the ongoing work of the Carteret County Rape Crisis Program. Additionally, the Rape Crisis Program will host various events throughout the month.

Events include the following:

  • National Day of Action – T.E.A.L. Tuesday (April 2): The first Tuesday of April is dedicated to raising awareness. Residents are encouraged to wear teal, the official color of sexual assault violence prevention, to show support for survivors. T.E.A.L. stands for Togetherness, Empowerment, Advocacy, and Learning.
  • 3rd Annual ‘Take Back the Night’ (April 10, 1 p.m.): Held at Carteret Community College, 3505 Arendell St., Morehead City, behind the Bryant Student Center. This event provides a platform for survivors and allies to share experiences and raise awareness about sexual violence.
  • Denim Day (April 24): This nationwide day of action encourages participants to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate the public about sexual assault. Denim Day originated in protest of a 1998 legal case where a court ruling implied that a victim's clothing contributed to her assault.

For more information about sponsoring this event and supporting free community education and services, contact the Rape Crisis Program of Carteret County at 252-504-3668.
