CARTERET COUNTY, NC (February 12, 2024) – Early voting in Carteret County for the Mar. 5 statewide primary election begins Feb. 15. Voters will be required to show photo identification in order to vote in this election. Citizens who do not have a photo ID can get a free ID at the Board of Elections office.
Early voting for the statewide primary election will be available from Feb. 15 - Mar. 2 at the following locations:
- Carteret County Board of Elections at 1702 Live Oak St., Suite 200, Beaufort, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Fort Benjamin Park at 100 McQueen Ave., Newport, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Morehead City Recreation Center at 1600 Fisher St., Morehead City, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Western Park at 275 Old Hwy 58, Cedar Point, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
All locations will also be open on the last day of early voting, on Saturday, Mar. 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Voters can vote at any of the early voting sites regardless of where they live.
On Election Day, Tuesday, March 5, polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is important to note that voters can only vote at their designated precinct on Election Day. The Board of Elections office will be open for voting during the early voting period only, and will not be open for voting on Election Day. Voters can find their assigned polling place by visiting the Election Day Polling Search feature on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.
Citizens may register to vote and vote on the same day during the early voting period. To register to vote, you must be a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old or will be by the date of the next general election, a legal resident of Carteret County for 30 days before Election Day, and not currently serving a felony sentence, which includes any period of probation, post-release supervision, or parole.
Curbside voting will also be available at all early voting sites for anyone unable to enter the voting location due to age, physical disability, and physical barriers encountered at the voting place.
In the primary election, voters will select nominees for a political party to move on to the general election on November 5, 2024. Contests on the ballot include U.S. President, U.S. House, N.C. Governor and other Council of State Offices, N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice, N.C. Court of Appeals, N.C. House and Senate, and county offices. Voters affiliated with a political party will be given a ballot of candidates for their party, if their party has a primary. Unaffiliated voters may choose to vote in any party’s primary, but they may select only one party’s ballot.
All voters will be required to show an acceptable form of photo identification in order to vote. Citizens who do not have a photo ID can get a free voter photo ID issued by the Carteret County Board of Elections. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Photo IDs can be issued at any time the Board of Elections is open, except the time period between the end of early voting through the end of Election Day.
Acceptable forms of ID include:
- North Carolina driver’s license
- State ID from the NCDMV (also called non-operator ID)
- Driver’s license or non-driver’s license from another state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election)
- U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
- Voter ID card issued by the County Board of Elections
- College or university student ID approved by the State Board of Elections
- State or local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections.
If a voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may proceed to vote in two ways:
- Complete an ID Exception Form and then vote with a provisional ballot.
- Vote with a provisional ballot and then return the ballot to their County Board of Elections office with their photo ID by the day before the County canvass.
