[ARCHIVED] Board of Elections offers free voter photo IDs ahead of busy election season

20240116 Elections Photo ID - Carteret

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (January 16, 2024) – With the 2024 Primary Election just weeks away on March 5, the Carteret County Board of Elections reminds residents that North Carolina's voter photo ID requirement will be in full effect. While municipal elections last fall offered a successful test run, officials encourage everyone to verify their registration and secure proper photo identification to ensure a smooth voting experience.

“While the new law has been in effect since last summer, the upcoming primaries and general elections will likely see a larger turnout – the first true test run for many voters,” said Carteret County Elections Director Caitlin Sabadish. “We want everyone to be prepared and avoid any last-minute surprises at the polls.”

Registered Carteret County voters who lack an acceptable form of photo ID can visit the Board of Elections office at 1702 Live Oak St., Suite 200, Beaufort, NC 28516. They will need to provide their name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their social security number. The process takes about 15 minutes, and most IDs are printed on the spot.

A full list of acceptable forms of photo ID for voting, including driver's licenses, military IDs, and college IDs, is available at https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/voter-id.

Important Dates:

  • Absentee Voting by Mail begins: Friday, January 19, 2024
  • Voter Registration Deadline: Friday, February 9, 2024
  • Early Voting Begins: Thursday, February 15, 2024
  • Last Day to Request an Absentee Ballot by Mail: Tuesday, February 27, 2024
  • Early Voting Ends: Saturday, March 2, 2024
  • Primary Election Day: Tuesday, March 5, 2024
