CARTERET COUNTY, NC (January 4, 2024) – As a part of National Radon Action Month, the Carteret County Cooperative Extension Program is teaming up with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' Radon Program to offer a free, four-hour class for licensed real estate brokers. The course, scheduled for Friday, January 19 from 8 am to noon at the NC Cooperative Extension, located at 303 College Circle in Morehead City, aims to equip brokers with the knowledge to emphasize the importance of radon testing to their clients during property transactions.
Radon, a silent and odorless gas, ranks as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. This initiative addresses the potential risk in North Carolina, where radon is prevalent in most counties due to the normal decay of elements in rocks and soil.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, though cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer, radon stands as the second major contributor, contributing to an estimated 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.
The upcoming course covers best practices for testing and mitigation strategies applicable to various building types, including single-family homes, multi-family homes, and large buildings.
Over the past three years, hundreds of real estate brokers across the state have completed this four-hour elective approved by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. The NC Radon Program, certified by the NC Real Estate Commission as an elective educator, will be led by Phillip Ray Gibson, Radon Program Coordinator at the NC Department of Health and Human Services and a licensed North Carolina real estate broker-in-charge.
Participants will earn four elective credits approved by the NC Real Estate Commission and receive an educational toolkit. The course is free, with online registration required.
