CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (April 30, 2025) — As Carteret County residents prepare for summer travel, the Register of Deeds office in Beaufort, located at 302 Courthouse Square, offers convenient, local U.S. passport services.
With many summer vacations involving international travel, the U.S. Department of State advises applying for passports several months in advance to accommodate processing times.
“We understand that preparing for a trip can be overwhelming,” said Karen Hardesty, Carteret County Register of Deeds. “Our goal is to make the passport application process as smooth and accessible as possible for our residents by offering all necessary services right here in Carteret County.”
The Register of Deeds office assists applicants by providing necessary forms, verifying identification, and ensuring all required documents are complete before submission to the U.S. Department of State. On-site passport photo services are available for a $15 fee per applicant, offering added convenience.
Information regarding expedited processing through the U.S. Department of State is also available for those needing passports sooner. Staff can explain eligibility and guide applicants through the required steps.
While the office primarily handles new passport applications, residents needing help with renewals can receive guidance on completing and submitting their applications by mail.
“It’s one less thing residents have to worry about as they prepare to travel,” Hardesty said. “We’re here to answer questions and help guide them through every step of the process.”
