Tomorrow is Election Day for the 2024 primary election

News Releases Posted on March 04, 2024

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (March 4, 2024) – Tomorrow, March 5, is Election Day and is the last opportunity to vote in the 2024 primary election. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and voters who vote in person must do so at their assigned Election Day precinct. Voters in line by 7:30 p.m. will have the opportunity to vote. Voters can view a sample ballot, find their polling location and learn about the requirements to vote by looking up their voter registration record on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.

All voters will be required to show an acceptable form of photo identification in order to vote.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • North Carolina driver’s license
  • State ID from the NCDMV (also called non-operator ID)
  • Driver’s license or non-driver’s license from another state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election)
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
  • Voter ID card issued by the County Board of Elections
  • College or university student ID approved by the State Board of Elections
  • State or local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections.

If a voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may proceed to vote in two ways:

  • Complete an ID Exception Form and then vote with a provisional ballot.
  • Vote with a provisional ballot and bring an acceptable form of photo ID to the County Board of Elections office by the day before the County canvass at 5:00 p.m.

Following the closure of the polls, the county board of elections will begin the process of posting unofficial results from mail-in absentee ballots and in-person early voting on the NCSBE results page. As a result of recent changes in state law, early voting results will be reported later than usual on election night for the 2024 primary. This, in turn, may cause Election Day results to be reported later as well.

Previously, county boards of elections could tabulate early voting results before the close of polls, then report those results almost immediately at 7:30 p.m. on election night. Under changes made in Session Law 2023-140, Section 29, county boards must wait until 7:30 p.m. to “close the polls” on early voting tabulators and begin the process of counting and reporting results of ballots cast during the early voting period.

This process will take an estimated 30 to 60 minutes – and possibly longer in some counties – before unofficial early voting results can be posted publicly on the State Board of Elections’ Election Results Dashboard. Because the March 5 primary will be the first election held under the new law, election officials do not know exactly how long it will delay the reporting of results.
