CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (June 2, 2025) – The Carteret County Public Library’s Down East branch will soon move to a new, larger location at 708 US Highway 70E in Otway, almost doubling its current space to 2,000 square feet.
The Down East branch will close to the public on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, for the move. It will reopen at the new Otway location on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
The move comes two years after the branch relocated from its former site at 702 US Highway 70E in Otway to its current Straits Road address. The upcoming transition will enable the library to continue serving the Down East community in a refreshed space, featuring an improved layout that offers public computer access, a small children’s area, and adaptable seating for reading or small gatherings.
During the transition, library staff will transfer collections, train personnel, and prepare the new facility. While physical materials will be unavailable on June 4, patrons can still access digital resources and return checked-out items to any Carteret County Public Library branch, including those in Beaufort, Newport, Pine Knoll Shores, and Cape Carteret.
Updates will continue to be shared on the library’s website, www.carteretcountypubliclibrary.com, and through its social media channels.
