January is the time for property owners to file tax listing changes

News Releases Posted on January 07, 2025

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (January 7, 2025) – As the new year begins, Carteret County property owners are reminded to file their personal property tax listings with the Tax Administrator's Office by Jan. 31, 2025, as required by North Carolina law.

Personal property listings can be submitted in person at the Carteret County Tax Administrator's Office, located at 302 Courthouse Sq. in Beaufort, or at the Western Office at 701 Cedar Point Blvd. in Cedar Point. Listings can also be submitted online, by mailing preprinted forms to the County’s processing center at P.O. Box 1046, Mount Airy, NC 27030-1046; or by calling (252) 728-8485. Personal property listing forms for existing accounts were mailed to property owners during the first week of January. However, failure to receive a listing form does not exempt property owners from the requirement to file.

Listing forms may be downloaded from the Carteret County Tax Administration website by clicking on the Forms and Publications tab. Forms are also available in person at the Tax Administration Office, which is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Business personal property owners showing good cause can obtain a filing extension to April 15, 2025, by applying online or by sending a written request to the Tax Administrator’s Office by Jan. 31, 2025. Failure to list business or individual personal property by Jan. 31, 2025, unless an extension is granted, will result in a 10 percent late listing penalty. If mailed, completed and signed listing forms must be postmarked on or before Jan. 31, 2025 to be accepted as timely.

Real estate property owners are not required to file real property listings, but they are encouraged to report any new improvements or deletions to their property to ensure accurate taxation.

Taxpayers should note that County Government offices and the Courthouse will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, for a scheduled holiday.

For more information, contact the Tax Administrator’s Office at (252) 728-8485 or visit carteretcountync.gov/154/Tax-Office.
