Beach Commission

Overview

The Beach Commission is comprised of eleven members that advise the Carteret County Board of Commissioners of beach nourishment strategies and expenditures of the room occupancy proceeds dedicated to beach nourishment activities.

The Commission is comprised of eleven voting members selected by the Board of Commissioners according to the following formula set forth in SL 2013-223:
  • Two individuals who reside within the town limits of Atlantic Beach
  • Two individuals who reside within the town limits of Pine Knoll Shores
  • Two individuals who reside within the town limits of Emerald Isle
  • One individual who resides within the town limits of Indian Beach
  • One individual who resides on Bogue Banks
  • One individual who resides anywhere in Carteret County
  • A member of the board of county commissioners
  • A member of the Carteret County Tourism Development Authority (TDA)
The Commission is augmented by the County Manager and the Shore Protection Manager. At the regular Board meeting in January of each year, the voting members present nominations for the offices of Chair and Vice Chair. The Shore Protection Manager, or other designee appointed by the Chair, serves as Secretary. 

The Beach Commission Mission Statement

"The mission of the Carteret County Beach Commission is to identify and develop plans, strategies, and programs to restore and maintain wide sandy beaches and dunes through environmentally sensitive beach nourishment, dune management, vegetation management, and sand management principles. The Board is committed to obtain funding at the federal, state, and local level for beach nourishment and storm protection that will prevent and mitigate further erosion of the existing shoreline. The Board supports policies and procedures that comply with all federal, state, and local requirements. The Board will strive to develop prudent management strategies for sustaining the productivity and economy of our coastal land and seascapes."

The Beach Commission Meetings & Members

Beach Commission meetings are open to the public and are held the fourth Monday of each month, 2:00 p.m., at the Emerald Isle Commissioners Board Room, within the building that houses the Town's Police Department (7500 Emerald Drive).  Meeting agendas and approved minutes are available at http://www.carteretcountync.gov/AgendaCenter.
